After opening shows for Adele and making quite a name for himself overseas, the 23-year-old London-based singer/songwriter Michael Kiwanuka will be heading over here to the U.S. for a couple headlining shows next month, and one of them is at Hotel Cafe on December 6th.  Buy your tickets now.  You can download the I’m Getting Ready EP over on iTunes, and check out a couple videos below.

Thanks to Dan Davis for the introduction.

Jake Newton – Kill the Past

September 27, 2011

The brand new debut full-length album from Jake Newton is out today and it’s awesome.  Kill the Past was superbly produced by Justin Glasco, engineered by Clay Blair, mixed by Bryan Cook, and recorded at Boulevard Studios and Mont Eagle Recordings in Los Angeles with some of LA’s finest musicians.  These 10 tracks are full of big sweeping choruses (“Your Eyes Have Circles”), and gut-wrenching lyrics (“Get Better”, “Strong Enough”).  The “don’t bore us, get to the chorus” tune “Call the Cops” was stuck in my head for several days back in June, and the same can be said for several other tracks here since owning the album.  Since I’ve known Jake’s music, the biggest strength and most notable aspect has always been his excellent vocal range, and now, with Kill the Past, his melodies and songwriting have matched it and come to define him as a truly gifted artist.

Check out the trailer for the album, and a solo acoustic performance of the opening track…

For those in LA, make sure you head out to Hotel Cafe this Friday night for the big record release show.  Get tickets here.

Not quite as good as the original video that was taken down, but this is still great…
